Impact of innovations on the film industry

The technological changes are about to change the film industry structure in the near future, in a positive way. No matter what background they belong to, all the filmmakers have access to the same professional tools needed for producing the independent film, short film, documentary, etc.

When you watch an old movie, you can know the degree to which innovations have revolutionized the film industry. The evolution of technology has impacted our lives, which is visible on and off the screen, right from the size of cell phones to that of the plastic Godzilla terrorizing Japan.

Here is a list of innovations which would remarkably affect the  film industry:

  • Glasses-Free 3D Technology

People usually feel that the 3D movies are more of a gimmick when they watch it by wearing the flimsy 3D glasses, for which they have to are even charged higher. To tackle such a situation, the researchers at MIT are working on a glassless 3D technology. Though this is not a completely new concept, because it is being used in TVs, to a restricted extent. But the real enhancement is regarding its application to the film industry and enhancement of the picture quality. The movie Avatar 2 is to come up with a glass-free 3D technology. This is because James Cameron’s company has entered into a 5 year deal with Christie, which is a technology company dealing with glassless option development. If this would really happen, then other filmmakers would definitely follow the trend.

  • Compatibility of the movies with mobile devices

Studios generate around 500 versions of a movie. The increasing usage of mobile phones had caused most of these versions to be compatible on mobile devices. The smartphone technology has made the video creators look after the user’s experience on the big screen as well as on the handheld devices. The compatibility lets a person watch videos at any time and any place through the use of video streaming services such as Youtube, Netflix, and Hulu. A study shows that a minimum of 50%  of the content in these media is viewed on the mobile phones. Though the editing and distribution have become easier because of the latest technologies with this, people have started demanding the creation of versions across various viewership levels.

  • Virtual Reality and augmented reality

3D movies aim at making the audience feel that they themselves are a part of the movie. Virtual reality plays a significant role in achieving this by increasing viewer engagement. It lets the audience get deeply engaged in the set as well as the characters involved in the world. This would impart them an experience by letting them participate instead of just watching the course of events.

The augmented reality technology has enhanced the experience of the users. For example, in the Pokémon Go game, the players can see the real world on their phone when they try to catch the Pokémon. This technology can be further made more interactive by personalizing it while using it in the films.
