Annihilation

Annihilation is a new sci-fi horror movie directed by Alex Garland and based off of the book by Jeff VanderMeer. It stars the beautiful Natalie Portman as the main character, a military scientist who enters a mysterious area called “The Shimmer.” The area is quarantined because anyone who enters falls gravely ill. Portman, along with her crew, enter to investigate wants going on and encounter mutated animals along with mysterious bouts of amnesia. The fight to survive and find their way out of the Shimmer. Portman plays the strong leader who must make the tough decisions and save her crew along with herself.

Lady Bird

Lady Bird is a beautiful coming of age indie film starring Saoirse Ronan who plays the eccentric girl who goes by the name Lady Bird. Lady Bird is in her last year of high school and troubled by the boring sameness of the town she lives in. She longs to go to an Ivy college in a “city of culture” but her mother wants her to have more realistic ambitions. Still, she applies to schools on the East Coast without her mother’s permission, hoping that she’ll be able to convince her once she’s accepted. Full of teenage drama and beautiful themes, Lady Bird will convince you to keep following your dreams even when the odds are against you.

Ocean’s 8

Based on the series of films Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 8 is the female take on the heist comedy genre. Taking place at the Met Gala in New York, Debbie must assemble a crack pot team to pull off the heist of the century. I, Tonya

I, Tonya is the hilarious biographical film of the famous figure skater Tonya Harding. Starrying Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding, the film follows the story of Tonya’s struggle to become a figure skater. With the reputation as a “white trash” skater, Tonya works to move past this and become known as more than that all while battling her rival Nancy Kerrigan. With beautiful skating and great acting, this film shows not only Tonya’s power but Margo Robbie’s as the strong female’s they are.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

Everyone loves the X-Men series but now they’ll love it even more with this close up film on Jean Grey’s life. This will be the 12th installment of the X-Men series and is marks the beginning of the new X-Men trilogy. Starring Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Turner has a huge reputation to fill and a challenge to show the struggles that Grey goes through with controlling her power. The movie takes place 10 years after X-Men: Apocalypse. A solar flare hits the X-Men when they’re on a mission causing Jean Grey to lose control and unleash the Phoenix. She must battle herself to try and take control of her powers before she loses herself completely and destroys the whole world.
