Chiwetel Ejiofor Biography:
Ejiofor was born and grew up in the Forest Green area of London. At the age of 8, he and his father were in a car crash in Lagos, and his father died. This left Chiwetel with scars on his forehead that can still be seen today in his movies. At the age of 14, he began acting and joined the National Youth Theater. His first foray into professional acting came when he won the role of Othello on stage at the Bloomsbury Theater in 1995, and the Theater Royal in 1996.
A year later he left London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts after being cast in his first movie, Steven Spielberg’s Amistad (1997). The movie was hugely successful and helped launch his career as an actor. He continued with theater roles over the next few years, earning an Olivier Award nomination for Blue/Orange. He followed this up with a leading role in the movie Dirty Pretty Things (2002), and an appearance in ensemble movie Love Actually (2005).
One of his most iconic roles came as The Operative in Joss Whedon’s Firefly spin-off film Serenity (2005). In the mid-’00s he appeared in a slew of successful movies including Kinky Boots (2005), Children of Men (2006), and American Gangster (2007). His biggest acclaim came in 2013 when he received the Academy Award nomination, and BAFTA Award win, for his portrayal of Solomon Northup in 12 Years a Slave (2013).
