Heath Ledger Biography:
Heathcliff Andrew Ledger was born on April 4, 1979, in Perth, Australia. His father (Kim Ledger) was a mining engineer and racing car driver, and his mother (Sally Ramshaw) was a French teacher. Heath Ledger’s entrance into acting was a complete accident. While at school, it was compulsory for every student to take one of two subjects – either cooking or drama. Because Heath didn’t want to take on cooking, he decided to choose acting, and soon realized he had an incredible talent. As soon as he turned 17, Heath and his friend left school to move to Sydney to pursue their dreams of becoming professional actors. His first paid acting job was in a low-budget production called Blackrock (1997). This small job led to TV work, including roles in Sweat (1996), Home and Away (1998) Paws (1997) and Roar (1997). As his name rocked the Australian acting circuit, it also made its way over to the United States, which secured him the role in the popular romantic comedy, 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) where he finally starred in a leading role. From here, his career spiraled upwards, and he was offered more and more prolific roles, including Monster’s Ball (2001), Ned Kelly (2003), Brokeback Mountain (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). The latter movie, where he played the infamous Joker, earned him numerous awards and nominations. A few months after he finished filming for The Dark Knight, on January 22, 2008, Heath Ledger was found dead in his hotel room. He was awarded his Academy Awards posthumously.
