Jena Malone Biography:

Born in Nevada, Jena is the daughter of Edward and Debbie Malone and was raised by her mother. Malone grew up in a poverty, and her family moved around on a frequent basis. By the time Jena was 9-years-old, it was estimated she had lived in 27 different locations. During this time, her mother was involved in community theater, and Malone began to develop an interest in acting through this. It led to the family moving to Los Angeles so Malone could pursue an acting career.

From the 6th Grade to 8th Grade she was homeschooled, before joining the Professional Children’s School for 9th Grade. Eventually, Malone progressed to professional acting. Her first foray was appearing in the music video for Michael Jackson’s ‘Childhood.’ She appeared in an episode of Chicago Hope and the TV movie Hidden in America (1996). Her first performance was in the movie Bastard Out of Carolina (1996). She continued this success by appearing in movies like Contact (1997) and Stepmom (1998).

Her best-known role came when she played the part of Gretchen Ross in the cult movie Donnie Darko (2001). She also appeared in, and co-produced, the movie Saved! (2004). Malone took an array of different roles to showcase her range, including parts in Into the Wild (2007), Sucker Punch (2011), and Nocturnal Animals (2016). She made her Broadway debut in the play Doubt in 2006, playing the role of Sister James.
