Paul Bettany Biography:
London-born Paul Bettany grew up in West London in the Shepherd’s Bush area. As a child, he always had a penchant for performing. When he was young, the family moved to Hertfordshire, and Bettany had a keen interest in music. When he was 16, Bettany’s younger brother died, and this transformed his life. He dropped out of school, left home, and went to live on his own. During this time he worked as a street performer and busker to earn a living. He then began working in a home for the elderly before enrolling in London’s Drama Centre.
He made his stage debut in An Inspector Calls and appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Richard III, and Julius Caesar. At the age of 21, he appeared in a BBC production of Oliver Twist. He then made appearances in Sharpe’s Waterloo, and Bent in 1997. These were his first screen experiences, and he would go on to enjoy a flourishing career on stage and screen. He received acclaim when he took a lead role in the British gangster movie Gangster No. 1 (2000).
In 2001 Bettany had a supporting role the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind. It was here that he met his future wife Jennifer Connelly – they married in 2003, and they live in New York with their children. Bettany has taken other roles in successful movies like The Da Vinci Code (2006), Legend (2015), and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). He will reprise his role as Vision in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, due for release next year.
