Rutger Hauer Biography:

Born in a small town in the Dutch province of Utrecht, Rutger Hauer was hardly rubbing shoulders with Hollywood’s elite. Luckily, both his parents were actors, and the family often moved around as a result. As a child, he was rebellious and ran away from home at the age of 15. He worked on a freighter for a year, during which time Hauer developed a keen interest in boats and sailing, but, being colorblind he was unable to have a career as a sailor. Instead, he returned to the family, started to work construction and went to night school. During this time his parents enrolled him in drama classes, and his passion for acting grew.

In 1969 his acting career took off when Paul Verhoeven cast him as the lead in Dutch TV series Floris. He became a big star in the Netherlands as a result, and began a working relationship with Verhoeven, appearing in Turkish Delight (1973). Several more Dutch movies followed until he made his American debut in Nighthawks (1981). Arguably his most famous role came a year later when he won critical acclaim for his portrayal of Roy Batty in Blade Runner (1982). He established further fame in The Hitcher (1985), Blind Fury (1989), and Past Midnight (1992).

The ‘00s saw Hauer take roles in movies like Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2003), and Sin City (2005). He also appeared in Batman Begins (2005), and Hobo With a Shotgun (2011). In terms of television, Hauer has appeared in series’ like Lexx, Alias, The 10th Kingdom, and True Blood. Hauer published his autobiography in 2007, with proceeds going to his charity.
