Will Smith Biography:
Willard Carroll Smith Jr. was born in Philadelphia in 1968. His mother was a school board administrator, and his father was a refrigerator engineer, and they separated when he was 13-years-old. Smith attended Overbrook High School but never applied for college because he wanted to be a rap star. He started MCing with his friend Jeffrey Townes, under the duo name DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. He achieved modest success as The Fresh Prince, winning a Grammy in 1988.
In 1990, on the verge of bankruptcy, Smith was offered a contract by NBC to make the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The show was successful and established Smith as a rising actor. He followed it up with roles in Six Degrees of Separation (1993), Bad Boys (1995), and Independence Day (1996). Further hits like Men in Black (1997) and I, Robot (2004) cemented Smith’s status as a box office megastar. He has seen 11 consecutive movies gross over $150 million and has been ranked as the world’s most bankable star on several occasions.
Smith is not just about action blockbusters though; in recent years he has become much more diverse as a movie star. He received two Academy Award nominations for dramatic roles in the movies Ali (2001) and The Pursuit of Happyness (2006). Smith married fellow actress Jada Pinkett in 1997, and the couple has two children together. His son, Jaden Smith, is also an actor, and he has starred alongside his father in The Pursuit of Happyness, and After Earth (2013).
Will also released four albums as a solo artist (the last being Lost and Found). Smith has had several multi-platinum selling records and won six Grammy Awards as a solo artist, the most recent in 2005.
