As a director, M. Night Shyalaman has revealed that he has started working on a brand new sci-fi movie. His most recent release was the superhero thriller Glass. Though bad reviews for Glass made Shyamalan cry, it seems the director has wiped off his tears and decided to settle down on the new film he is working on.
This will not be the first time that Shyalaman dips his toes in the sci-fi genre. As a matter of fact, his 2002 film Signs was a genuinely scary sci-fi horror, furthermore, the film is still regarded by many as one of his best. Shyalaman is really no stranger to such career highs and lows especially when there was the Will Smith fronted post-apocalyptic sci-fi After Earth, which was nigh-on universally panned. Well, of course, there will always be critics who this time round have raved about films including The Sixth Sense, The Visit, and Split. Shyamalan films like The Last Airbender, Lady in the Water and the Happening haven’t gone down so well.
“”Outlining new film…Has a little fun sci-fi bent. Feels so good to begin a new story.”” This is what Shyalaman tweeted as he announced the film on Twitter as he teased his fans. All said, whatever the movie is it is still in the early stages as deduced from the rather cryptic tone of his teaser tweet. However, this time around, it does not look like the director intends to carry out another sequel or crossover and not any time soon yet. This may be due to those bad reviews for Glass that might have made him to completely change his driving route for the foreseeable future.
One thing to note is that the director also describes his new movie as that having a “”fun sci-fi bent.”” This is one way or another suggests that it might not be an out-and-out sci-fi but rather a movie containing elements of sci-fi or perhaps a hybrid of genres like sci-fi horror ‘Signs.’ According to IMDB, one of Shyalaman’s upcoming films is Labor of Love-a romantic mystery drama about a widower who goes on a cross-country trip in a bid to prove his love for his late wife, quite interesting, isn’t it? Labor of Love was supposed to star Bruce Willis although it would definitely seem that it’s been put on the back burner indefinitely as there have not been many words on the movie for a few years.
Probably, we can rule out the possibility of Labor of Love being Shyalaman’s secret sci-fi film on the basis that it is an old script. It is a script that Shyalaman sold to 20th Century Fox back in the early ’90s therefore apparently stuck in development hell. In the meantime, Shyamalan fans have got to be a little patient and put into use the plenty time they got to speculate over the next movie and hope it turns out a bit better than Glass.
