In the Disney remakes, a new remake may fall under three categories. These are:
• The Beauty and the Beast category-over$1billion.
• The Aladdin category-$900 million to $1billion.
• The Dumbo category-less than $900million.
Lion King is on its way to being released in a couple of days. The question remains; under which category will this long awaited film fall? Its final resting position is yet to be seen now that critics are becoming more barbaric on their reviews.
To start off, I would elegantly mention that Lion King is not going to experience what Dumbo went through. The film had sadly accrued $352 million globally. Its reviews on the other hand were not encouraging- (46%) rating. The audience score was also just (52%), just slightly above the halfway score.
Lion King has Aladdin’s potential and I suppose it would do even better. Aladdin set a record for Will Smith’s career after it registered a staggering $960 million worldwide. I believe it had a better audience score than Dumbo.
So, if The Lion King surpasses both Dumbo and Aladdin, then it would be headed for the greatness of Beauty and the Beast. Here’s why 2017’s movie Beauty and the Beast is regarded as Disney’s greatest remake ever:
• It made a total of $1.26billion worldwide.
• $504 million domestic gross.
• The live-action remake’s accrued amount was a record for Disney.
• It had receive a solid 71%score from the critics.
Well, that is still a record that is yet to be broken. As for me, I am optimistic that Lion King will be the record-breaker, and this would only be a reality if it registers close to $650M as the domestic gross.
Beauty and the Beast was very lucky to be the only remake in 2017 and that could be the reason behind its astonishing success. As for 2019, remakes are flowing as if there would be no other year for them to be released.
Nonetheless, fans are highly anticipating for Lion King to be awesome because the Box Office, a few months ago, projected it with a domestic opening of about $200 million. The total domestic gross was also $5650 million. You can therefore hope for a better worldwide gross! Aladdin for instance has:
• $331.5 million domestic gross.
• $628.7 million from overseas.
• $960 million worldwide gross.
Reports show that Lion King is set to be one of the most successful Disney remakes. China which is the second largest market after US is in a potential run of $170million. Aladdin had had a potential run of just$53.3 million.
You can therefore see where Lion King is at-three times above Aladdin and almost twice as Beauty and the Beast’s $89.2milion. This potential record is even far way more than Jungle Book’s $150 million from China in 2016.
Jungle Book was on the verge of closing in on $1billion worldwide with a 95% fresh rating from critics. At the moment, Lion King has a rating of 59% from 123 reviews. Certainly, the coming weekend will decide Lion King’s fate.
