If you’ve seen Aquaman, Furious 7, or The Conjuring, you’ll know what makes James Wan so appealing. Here’s a man who can work with various genres from fantasy to action and horror.
With the first two aforementioned films making $1 billion each at the box office, Wan has a lot of money at his disposal. And now, he’s producing a movie that video gamers have always wanted.
Building Enough Resources
The 42-year-old Australian didn’t always have the luxury of producing films. But one thing was clear early on: Wan was a skilled filmmaker.
In 2000, his first movie Stygian received an award at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. Likewise, he directed Saw, which became a box office success.
Saw was such a hit that it became a sprawling movie franchise. There are already eight Saw movies, with another one titled The Organ Donor set for a 2020 release.
After that, Wan directed Insidious. That had a mere budget of $1.5 million and went on to earn nearly $100 million worldwide.
Wan knew there was money in making good horror movies. He directed the first two The Conjuring films, which each raked in over $300 million at the box office.
And with his directorial role in both Furious 7 and Aquaman, it’s clear that Wan can now produce movies left and right.
A New Vision of the Game
So what movie is he producing? It’s none other than Mortal Kombat. Sure, there are already two earlier movie adaptations. But most people have already forgotten about 1995’s Mortal Kombat and the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
Wan wants to give newer and younger audiences a reason to play the video game. The franchise could use a reboot — and he has the money to do it.
He’ll produce it along with Todd Garner and New Line Cinema. As for the release, the Mortal Kombat reboot is set for a 2021 premier.
This time, Wan envisions a Mortal Kombat movie that represents the game well. If it needs to be violent, then he’ll seek an R rating. This is similar to acclaimed and commercially successful movies such as Logan and Joker.
Finding the Right People
James Wan being involved doesn’t ensure that Mortal Kombat will be a surefire success. But Wan isn’t the only one working hard on this movie.
The writer Greg Russo said that the current costume design is amazing. Marvel and DC movies have also updated how their superheroes look on the big screen. Thus, we can’t wait for how the fighters look in the reboot.
Also, Russo said that the character makeup is just as gorgeous. As for the weapons, he assured fans that they will not be disappointed.
There’s no reason to be worried about the cast as well. So far, the reboot includes The Raid’s Joe Taslim, Power Rangers’ Ludi Lin, The Dark Knight’s Chin Han, Supergirl’s Mehcad Brooks, and Thor: Ragnarok’s Tadanobu Asano.
Filming already started in September. With James Wan and other passionate individuals behind this film, there is a good reason to await its release.
